2007 SIGMOD DISSERTATION AWARD RECIPIENTS

The SIGMOD Dissertation Award Committee presents the 2007 SIGMOD Dissertation Award to Ariel Fuxman (advisor: Renee J. Miller) for his work at the University of Toronto and his dissertation on "Efficient Query Processing over Inconsistent Databases". This dissertation combines theoretical and conceptual work on query rewriting for inconsistent and uncertain data, with implementation and experimentation demonstrating effectiveness of the approach on large-scale databases. The work is significant in bringing sound database theory into practice and offering efficient solutions to urgent real problems.

Two other nominees receive Honorable Mention recognizing their outstanding work on theoretical foundations and development of algorithms with great impact on important practical problems: Cong Yu (advisor: H.V. Jagadish), for his dissertation on "Managing Complex Databases in a Schema Management Framework" at the University of Michigan, and, Nilesh Dalvi (advisor: Dan Suciu), for his dissertation on "Managing Uncertainty Using Probabilistic Databases" at the University of Washington.
