Return to Information Retrieval, Digital Libraries and Indexing XML - the eXtensible Markup Language - has recently emerged as a new standard for data representation on the Web. However, most query languages available for XML documents provide poor mechanisms for query formulation, burdening users to recall precisely the query language and the document structure. To solve this problem, we propose an approach which allows users to specify queries on XML data using a graphical interface based on the XQL language. Our interface allows the user to formulate his/her queries through a very intuitive graphical metaphor which represents the structure of an XML document. The interface was implemented on the top of a Perl module which implements the XQL language. Through experimentation with real XML data extracted from the Web, we illustrate the effectiveness of our interface. DiSC'01 Copyright ©2002 ACM Inc. |
