Workshop registration for those who do not wish to attend the
conference will be available on-site if space is available.
Off-site registration ends midnight, Thursday, May 10.
The online registration server will be disabled at that time and all
registration-related faxes and letters (including checks, POs) addressed to the

After May 10, conference registration will be handled at the conference
location in the Fess Parker Double Tree Resort in Santa Barbara, California. On-site
registration starts Monday, May 21 at 8:30am and will be available on each day
of the conference through Wednesday, May 23.

Due to the California energy crisis, there will be a state-wide
$3 surcharge on each night's stay.
The hotel is a 24-acre oceanside resort. Every room has a patio
and balcony offering views of the resort gardens, Santa Ynez Mountains or
Pacific Ocean. The resort offers an array of amenities from tennis courts,
putting green, shuffleboard to pool/jacuzzi hair salon and spa services.

are all booked up at this point.
However, Radisson Hotel will set aside 20 rooms
at $159 for SIGMOD participant. Please call the hotel reservation at
1800-333-3333 and ask for "ACM SIGMOD" rate. The rate will remain effective
before May 10 and if there are rooms available.

The Harbor View Hotel has about 10 Rooms for the week of 05/19/01-5/24/01.
For reservation please call and ask for Eric in the sales department,
tell him you are coming for the conference at the Doubletree Hotel
(the conference hotel) to qualify for the corporate rate of $115-$145.00.
Habor View Hotel is about 1 mile away from the conference hotel along
the coast. It is close to downtown.

you may consider the alternative of staying near the Airport

Transportation:
Santa Barbara Airport
is located about 10 miles west of downtown Santa Barbara. There are a few ways
to get to the hotel from the Airport:

A free shuttle service provided by the hotel (you should
make a reservation for the shuttle pickup at the airport at the time of
making your hotel reservation).

A typical cab ride from the airport costs about $28-33 and
takes about 15-20 minutes.

Super Ride (phone: 805-683-9636) costs about $19.

To drive, exit the airport and turn right, following the
sign "to Santa Barbara". Take Freeway 217 (if you take the wrong
direction you will enter UCSB, make a U-turn after the parking kiosk, and
you will be on the right direction). 217 will merge into Freeway 101. Drive
for about 9 miles, and exit at Milpas. Turn right at Milpas, pass the
railway cross, turn right at the next traffic light (Calle Puerto Valarta)
and the hotel parking lot is on the right.
Los Angeles International Airport
is about 100 miles away.
There are a few possibilities of going to the conference hotel:

Santa Barbara Airbus between LAX and Santa Barbara Airport (with a stop
at the Radisson Hotel, 1111, E. Cabrillo Blvd, 2-3 blocks from the
conference hotel) about every two hours. The round trip fare is $64
(prepaid) or $69 (non-prepaid). If you plan to take the bus, you are however
advised to make a reservation since sometimes the bus is full.

To drive, exit LAX and take Freeway 405 north, change to 101 north, exit
at Milpas. Turn left (roundabout) at Milpas, pass the railway cross, turn
right at the next traffic light (Calle Puerto Valarta) and the hotel parking
lot is on the right.
About Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara is a "get out in the sunshine and fresh air" place,
with all the activities that implies. The average annual rainfall is about 15
inches, and the average rainfall for May is only 0.2 inches.
Santa Barbara has a unique geographic situation. For roughly 40 miles on
either side of Santa Barbara, the Pacific coastline runs almost due East/West.
This alignment moderates the ocean currents that flow past Santa Barbara's front
door. Towering mountains, incredibly close to the sea, shelter the coastal strip
from inland heat and cold. The result is a comfortable year-round average
temperature of 64 degrees, with an average maximum of 74 and an average minimum
of 56 degrees. The highs and lows in May are around 70 and 50 degrees,
respectively. For May 21, the record high is 78 degrees (1989) and the record
low is 42 degrees (1942).

- Santa Barbara County Courthouse. Timeless Spanish-Moorish masterpieces
with colorful corridors, historic mural room, 85 ft. observation tower.
Great views from the clock tower. 1100 Anacapa St.
- Zoological Gardens. Over 700 animals on the grounds of a former beachside
estate. 500 Ninos Dr.
- El Presidio De Santa Barbara Historic Park. The Presidio includes
buildings that were part of the last Spanish mili-tary outpost in the New
World. The chapel contains re-stored 18th century decorations. 123 E. Canon
Perdido St.
- ARLINGTON CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS. Originally built in 1875 the
interior contains a mock Spanish village. Curved ceiling is "star
studded" and creates an outdoor illusion. 1317 State St.
- Santa Barbara County is a world-class touring and wine tasting
destination, renowned for distinguished wines and golden countryside dotted
with quaint western towns and friendly locals. Today's wine boom centers in
the Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valleys, boasting 56 wineries. Acclaimed for
its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir varietals, the area also produces Merlot,
Cabernet Franc, and Rhone varietals such as Syrah.
- Santa Barbara Historical Museum. Charming adobe com-plex, built in 1817,
houses one of the finest collections of regional history in California. 136

- STEARNS WHARF & SEA CENTER. Oldest operating wharf on the West coast.
Sea Center offers a glimpse into marine life that inhabits the Santa Barbara
Channel. Nature Conservancy includes displays dedicated to the preservation
of rare and endangered species and habitat types. At the foot of State St.
- SANTA BARBARA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY. Nationally renowned museum
specializing in North American West Coast and California natural history.
