ACM SIGMOD is pleased to present the 2010 Jim Gray Doctoral Dissertation Award to Christopher Re, who completed his PhD at the University of Washington for his dissertation titled “Managing Large-scale Probabilistic Databases.”The dissertation makes significant contributions to large-scale management of probabilistic data, including top-k queries, evaluating queries with HAVING predicates, and materialized views. The thesis beautifully combines deep foundational research with impressive systems work; it contains an entire framework for querying, reusing, approximating, and indexing probabilistic data for practical aspects of probabilistic data management.

Two other outstanding dissertations received Honorable Mentions recognizing their strong contributions to the field:

  • Soumyadeb Mitra who completed his PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for his dissertation titled “Trustworthy and Cost Effective Management of Compliance Records,” and
  • Fabian Suchanek who completed his PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics for his dissertation titled “Automated Construction and Growth of a Large Ontology.”
