Serge Abiteboul 1998 SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award

Serge Abiteboul received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in 1982, and his French ThŽse d’Etat from the University of Paris XI in 1986. He is Senior Researcher at I.N.R.I.A. and managed the VERSO Database Group from 1991 to 1999. He also has a joint professor position at the Ecole Polytechnique. He is one of the co-authors of Foundations of Databases, the reference in database theory. He has worked recently on object databases, digital libraries, semistructured data, data integration, electronic commerce. He has been program chair of ACM PODS-1995, ICALP-1994, ICDT-90. He is the future program chair of ECDL-99 (European Conference on Digital Libraries) and of the EDBT99 Summer School. He received the 1998 ACM SIGMOD Innovation Award.
