The ACM SIGMOD Conference on Management of Databases and the ACM (a.k.a. ACM SIGMOD Conference) and the  SIGMOD-SIGACT-SIGART Conference on Principles of Database Systems (a.k.a. ACM PODS Conference), which are held jointly annually, are premier venues for publication of database research.

In contrast to the earlier mechanism of the ACM SIGMOD papers being published in the Proceedings of the ACM SIGMOD on Management of Data, since 2023, papers submitted to SIGMOD are, on acceptance, published in the newly created journal Proceeding of the ACM on Management of Data (PACMMOD), and invited for presentation at the SIGMOD conference. Since 2024, ACM PODS submissions are, on acceptance, published in PACMMOD instead of the Proceedings of the ACM PODS. PACMMOD issues are correspondingly tagged as SIGMOD or PODS issues.

Research papers published in issues of PACMMOD that are tagged as SIGMOD issues are invited for presentation at the ACM SIGMOD conference, while those published in issues of PACMMOD tagged as PODS issues are invited for presentation at the ACM PODS conference. There is no change in the acceptance norms or quality of publications, or in the review process, as a result of the above changes.

Since most publication indices have a 2 year waiting period for inclusion of new journals, PACMMOD is (as of September 2024) not yet included in any of the journal indices. We expect it will get included on completion of the 2 year period, similar to other PACM journals that started earlier.  When it gets included, past issues will also get included in the indices.

While the SIGMOD EC does not have specific views on conference venue rankings, rankings, such as the Australian CORE rankings and the China CCF rankings, do play an important role in employment and career advancement of researchers.

Therefore, as an interim measure the SIGMOD EC has the following recommendation.

The SIGMOD Executive Committee (EC) recommends that publications in PACMMOD issues tagged as SIGMOD may be treated as equivalent to publications in Procs. Of ACM SIGMOD and similarly publications in issues tagged as PODS may be treated as equivalent to publication in Procs. Of ACM PODS, for the purpose of venue ranking.
